The neck is often overlooked when considering aesthetics of the face. An aged neck or a very full neck will draw attention away from an attractive face. Aging affects the neck and the face in a similar fashion; in part due to descent of tissues which can lead to sagging and jowling, and in part due to loss of skin elasticity which can lead to pleating and the appearance of bands. These changes result in loss of definition of the jawline, a critical focal-point of an attractive face.

It is common for patients to come in to see Dr. Gonzalez for a facelift consultation, and during the visit learn that their neck needs to be addressed as well with a neck lift.

Another situation we see commonly, are younger patients who do not need a facelift and who have a very attractive face; however, a very full or doughy neck with no sharp angles steals away from their facial features.

Consultation visits for neck lift surgery are very comprehensive, most of the time is dedicated to Dr. Gonzalez learning about your goals, reviewing  photos with you, and then putting together a specific plan for you.

Neck lift surgery targets sagging skin, excess fat, and muscle banding in the neck area –  every patient is different, some may require one of these features addressed, others require addressing all of them. There are two locations where neck lift incisions are placed. Most of the time incisions are placed within a crease we all have below and behind our chin, which conceals the incision nicely. Sometimes, incisions are placed behind the ears, which are the same incisions we use for a facelift. Using the under the chin incision or behind the ear incisions  depends on what needs to be addressed: a double chin, poorly defined neck angles, muscle bands, or whether this is being done with the facelift.  By addressing sagging skin, excess fat, and muscle banding, the results of a neck lift can enhance your overall facial profile and restore a more youthful appearance.

It is important to follow Dr. Gonzalez’s instructions regarding preoperative preparation. This may include avoiding certain medications, being nicotine free, and maintaining a healthy diet and lifestyle. You will need to arrange for someone to assist you during the initial recovery period. We provide a list of the suggested items to have on hand.  We will guide you on how to be well-prepared in order to have a sound recovery from surgery

If you’re not ready for surgery, non-invasive options like dermal fillers, Botox and laser treatments offer non-invasive solutions for skin texture issues like fine wrinkles or volume loss. These temporary solutions may help improve your skin’s texture while simultaneously decreasing wrinkles.  These non-surgical options can also be reviewed with Dr. Gonzalez during your consultation.

After your neck lift surgery, it is crucial to carefully follow Dr. Gonzalez’s post-operative instructions for a sound recovery. The recovery period for a neck lift typically lasts about one to two weeks, but this may vary on a case-by-case basis. During this time, it is important to rest and avoid strenuous activities.  Dr. Gonzalez may recommend wearing a compression garment to improve swelling. It is important to keep your head elevated and avoid any excessive bending or twisting of the neck. Dr Gonzalez’s office will schedule follow-up appointments to monitor your progress and remove any sutures. By following all aftercare instructions, you can ensure a safe and effective recovery after your neck lift surgery.
